Indians Chair Says Discussion On Chief Wahoo Logo Has Increased Since Manfred Weighed In

Indians Chair & CEO Paul Dolan said that he "favors a reduced use" of Chief Wahoo "without eliminating the logo, but he suspects the logo will be resolved one way or the other within a couple of years," according to Ed Carroll of the CLEVELAND JEWISH NEWS. Dolan: "We are mindful that there are people who are offended by it, and frankly if you leave Northeastern Ohio, it changes, the prospective on this changes. We were on some path towards a middle ground, I don’t know what that path was, and that’s still where we’re headed, but we’re headed there faster than we’ve ever liked because the commissioner of baseball weighed in on this.” Dolan said that Commissioner Rob Manfred has "reached out to the franchise about its logo, particularly after a Canadian lawsuit was filed against the team and MLB for using the logo" during the '16 playoffs against the Blue Jays. Meanwhile, the Indians expect to have "more than 2 million fans in total attendance this season" and hope to "break 2.5 million." Dolan, referring to the years when the Cavaliers were not an NBA Finals contender and the city had no professional football, said, “We’re not going to return to what happened in the ’90s and the earlier part of the century. That was a unique circumstance that goes along with various things that were in place then, and we’ve changed as a community" (CLEVELANDJEWISHNEWS.com, 5/10). YAHOO SPORTS' Mike Oz noted the Indians have been transitioning away from the logo "for a few years now, as they’ve changed their primary logo and de-emphasized Chief Wahoo on some of their uniforms." However, the "message the Indians appear to be getting is: 'Speed this up.'” The club has "tried to appease both sides shouting at them about Chief Wahoo" -- but that "hardly ever works" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 5/10).
