Franchise Notes

In New Jersey, John Brennan notes many Yankees fans "are bailing out" on Sunday's Derek Jeter Night with a "chance of showers and a high of 61 degrees that afternoon." Sunday is also Mother's Day, so while the game does not start until 7:35pm ET, some "still may have realized that issue after initial purchases." In fact, some tickets "remain available directly through the Yankees website, while about 7,000 tickets are available on the secondary market" (Bergen RECORD, 5/11).

NOT IN A MILLION YEARS: In Chicago, Rick Morrissey writes conventional wisdom "holds that the White Sox never will make a big trade with the Cubs." Most people with even a "passing familiarity" with White Sox Chair Jerry Reinsdorf "think the chairman rather would pull out his own teeth than do anything that could benefit the Sox' crosstown rival." That "might seem incredibly shortsighted, even petty." Morrissey: "I completely understand if the idea of helping the Cubs hurts Reinsdorf from head to toe. It should." They "compete against each other for fans, for media attention, for advertisers, for the air they breathe." Why would the White Sox "do something that might put them even further behind in the battle for hearts?" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 5/11).

STILL HOLDING STRONG: In Edmonton, Gerry Moddejonge reported the CFL Eskimos were "once again in the black, financially, announcing a consolidated net profit" totaling $1,417,795 (all figures C) in '16. Eskimos President & CEO Len Rhodes said, "The financial side is actually very strong. We were in a tough economy last year but our net profit from operations was $2.1 million and we're very pleased with that." Moddejonge noted the Eskimos finished second in attendance in '16, "averaging 30,684 fans at home games." While that "crucial figure is down" 2.7% from '15, the league average last season was 24,490, which is down 3.7% (EDMONTON JOURNAL, 5/10).
