Verizon Invests Millions To Improve Wireless Service At Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Verizon is "investing millions of dollars to make sure its customers can get wireless service" at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, according to Anthony Schoettle of the INDIANAPOLIS BUSINESS JOURNAL. Those driving past IMS might have "noticed five 600-pound, sphere-shaped objects towering over the 2.5-mile oval race track." Each MatSing Ball installation "contains 36 to 60 antennas." Verizon officials expect the new tech to "increase capacity of their existing wireless system at the track" by 200% and coverage by more than 300%. However, Verizon, which serves as title sponsor for the IndyCar Series, "declined to say how much they are investing in the permanent infrastructure." However, a company exec said that the installation is a "multi-million-dollar project." Verizon Principal Engineer Dan Huffman said that the upgrade "represents the largest installation" of MatSing Ball tech in the U.S. and the first in Indiana. Huffman said that this also "marks the first time" that MatSing Balls have been "permanently installed at a sports venue anywhere in North America." Verizon officials said that the tech "will be operational in time" for the IndyCar Grand Prix on May 13. The balls "will be operational for all events" at IMS throughout the year (IBJ.com, 4/24).
