Bettman Says Islanders Plan To Submit Bid To Build New Arena At Belmont Park

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman on Friday said that the Islanders "plan to submit a bid to the state to build a new hockey arena at Belmont Park," according to Rose, Baumbach & Brodsky of NEWSDAY. Bettman said the Islanders "are reviewing their options." He also "mentioned the land next to Citi Field in Willets Point as a potential landing spot for the Islanders and added that the renovated Nassau Coliseum is 'not a long-term option.'" Bettman: "Yes, there is an RFP for Belmont and I know they are going to participate in that. I believe that everyone thinks there is a terrific opportunity there, if not at Willets Point, to create a more hockey friendly environment for the Islanders, which is something (Islanders co-owner) Scott (Malkin) is committed to do." Sources said that the Islanders have been "talking with the owners of the Mets about teaming up on the development." The Islanders are "being advised" by Oak View Group, which is "backed by Madison Square Garden." Bettman's comments come as the Islanders and Barclays Center "near a deadline to open a renegotiation period of their license agreement that must occur before either side can opt out of the 25-year deal in January" (NEWSDAY, 4/22). The N.Y. Daily News’ Bob Raissman said, “I like the track a lot -- especially Belmont, it’s a beautiful place. You don’t need an arena there. Plus, there is (little) public transportation into Belmont which would make it crazy.” SNY’s Marc Malusis said the “infrastructure’s just not there" (“Daily News Live,” SNY, 4/21).

ACHY BREAKY HART: In Hartford, Russell Blair noted the city's "long-shot bid" to land the Islanders "fizzled out" with Bettman's comments on Belmont Park. Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy had "reached out to Islanders ownership earlier this year pitching XL Center as home for the NHL franchise." He also is pushing for a $250M "overhaul of the XL Center but has said that effort ... wasn't an attempt to lure a team" (HARTFORD COURANT, 4/22).
