NHL Franchise Notes: Brendan Shanahan Lauded For Maple Leafs' Quick Turnaround

In Toronto, Steve Simmons notes Maple Leafs President Brendan Shanahan is in "his third season on the job" and the club has "remarkably" already qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Leafs are in the postseason for the first time since '12-13, and Shanahan said the surprising season is “just another positive step in the process." As "proud as Shanahan is of the progress made by the Leafs this season, he is just as proud of the people who work around him." Shanahan "singled out" coach Mike Babcock and Assistant GM Mark Hunter for the "impact they have had on the worst-to-wild card season of the Leafs" (TORONTO SUN, 4/11).

LIGHT MY FIRE: In Calgary, Joel Griffith notes Flames playoff tickets are "proving to be a hot item" ahead of Monday’s Game 3 against the Ducks, the team's first home game in the first-round series. Flames VP/Sales, Ticketing & Customer Service Rollie Cyr said, "The interest is very high, equal to what we had two years ago." Griffith notes there are 3,000 tickets being "made available through a registration draw in which people are able to enter for the right to purchase tickets." The draw winners will be "announced before Thursday" (CALGARY HERALD, 4/11).

FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE: Oilers fans with "high hopes of snagging playoff tickets" yesterday were "out of luck" just 5 minutes after they went on sale. Tickets went on sale at 10:00am MT, and the Oilers in an afternoon email said they had a "very limited inventory” of “hundreds of tickets per game.” Comments from fans on both Facebook and Twitter "reflected disappointment" (EDMONTON JOURNAL, 4/11).

LINE CHANGE? TSN.ca's Frank Seravalli notes Islanders ownership has "reportedly been interviewing candidates for an overarching team president position, possibly to replace" GM Garth Snow. The Isles "must also chart a path for a well-respected hockey man" and current coach Doug Weight, who replaced Jack Capuano in January and "led the Isles from last place in the [Eastern Conference] to the brink of the playoffs on the penultimate day of the season." Weight could also "pursue a management role, as he wore the dual title" of Assistant GM (TSN.ca, 4/11).
