Marketplace Roundup

In Baltimore, Holden Wilen noted South Carolina's appearance in the Final Four is "not only the first in school history, but also the first for any Under Armour-sponsored school." NPD Group Sports analyst Matt Powell said that it "could be a marketing boon for the company." UA said that it is "working on details about its marketing" around this weekend (BIZJOURNALS.com, 3/28). In Detroit, Frank Witsil notes the city's new 16,000-plus-square-foot Under Armour store is "set to open April 13." The store will be located "not far from rival sportswear retailer Nike, which opened last spring to big crowds and fanfare" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 3/29).

STARTING OFF HOT: In Portland, Matthew Kish noted Nike will "release thousands of new products this year." The company's VaporMax sneaker was "released Sunday for $190 and quickly sold out," with sneaker blogs "calling it a hit." Kish wrote this is "exactly what Nike needs" as it battles a "resurgent Adidas" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 3/28).

ENTERING THE FOLD: In Boston, Donna Goodison writes footwear and apparel company Saucony has "unveiled its entrant in the running shoe release run-up" to the '17 Boston Marathon. The Saucony Limited Edition Boston Freedom ISO sneaker, "inspired by Boston’s Freedom Trail," is the Massachusetts-based shoe company’s "new Hub-themed racer." The running shoes, in "liberty blue" for men and "revolutionary red" for women, retail for $160 (BOSTON HERALD, 3/29).
