Eagles' Jeffrey Lurie Praises Howie Roseman For Rebuild, Stresses Patience To Fans

While Eagles Owner Jeffrey Lurie "remains a patient man" after 23 years of owning the team, fans "remain understandably antsy about the franchise's prospects" of finally winning a Super Bowl, according to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Lurie yesterday said that the Eagles "must stay committed to a long-term methodology that was put in place." Lurie: "It takes a very patient, disciplined approach. Short-term solutions to get to 10-6 ... without a quarterback are non-sustainable. You've got to draft well. You've got to have multiple drafts in a row." But McLane notes Lurie's message "doesn't exactly mesh with some of the personnel decisions made over the last two offseasons." And it "doesn't exactly intertwine with increasing evidence that the owner has taken on a more active role -- an aggressive one -- in football operations." But "one thing is certain: Lurie doesn't believe that his Eagles are currently built to contend." Asked for his expectations for '17, Lurie said, "It's all about consistent improvement" (PHILLY.com, 3/28). In Newark, Eliot Shorr-Parks notes Lurie yesterday also "spent plenty of time heaping praise" on Exec VP/Football Operations Howie Roseman. That "shouldn't be surprising, considering Lurie's fierce loyalty to Roseman, but nonetheless, Lurie pointed out time-and-time again" former coach Chip Kelly's "mistakes that Roseman fixed." Roseman helped navigate the Eagles out of a "bad cap situation because of Kelly" and also traded up for QB Carson Wentz last year. Roseman "hasn't yet shown Lurie he can build a winning team, but after his franchise (in his opinion) fell to shambles under Kelly, Lurie clearly gives Roseman the credit for putting it back together" (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 3/29).

THROWING IT BACK: Shorr-Parks also notes Lurie "did not hold back when asked about adding a kelly green uniform to the team's wardrobe." Lurie: "We're going to keep at it. We're determined." Shorr-Parks wonders if a "permanent change [could] be coming, from the team's midnight green to the throwback kelly green they last wore" in '96. Lurie: "First I want to try it as an alternate. Try it for two or three games. See if people like it." The Eagles "proposed a rule change" at the league meetings, which "would have allowed them to wear the kelly green helmet, but it was withdrawn after Lurie was told it would not pass." That will not, however, "stop the Eagles from trying" (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 3/29).
