Media Notes

The MMQB's Peter King writes NBC has used the addition of the “double-box” on NASCAR telecasts "while cars are circling the track, and on the Ryder Cup." NFL Network actually, "quietly, experimented with the double-box in Week 16 last year, doing a commercial on half the screen and showing a team timeout" in Texans-Bengals on the other half of the screen. King: "I’d expect this to be used during some replay reviews in 2017, to see if the system works" (MMQB.SI.com, 3/27).

AFTER THIS COMMERCIAL BREAK: Motorsports writer Jeff Gluck wrote nothing about the current state of NASCAR makes him "angrier or more frustrated than the commercials." Gluck: "It’s no wonder TV ratings are in the toilet." No other major sport "disrespects its fans like this." Even soccer figures out a way to show games -- including World Cup games -- "without commercial interruption (except for halftime)." Most sports fans "wouldn’t tolerate a broadcaster cutting away from live game action, but for some reason, NASCAR fans are just expected to shut up and deal with it" (JEFFGLUCK.com, 3/26).

BALL IS LIFE: In N.Y. Bob Raissman noted LaVar Ball, father of UCLA G Lonzo Ball, "scored a TKO win" over ESPN's Stephen A. Smith on "First Take" last week. Smith "staggered to the radio microphone the same day to go another round with Ball, only to be whipped out again." Thursday’s “First Take” featuring Ball "drew 480,000 viewers, topping the highly promoted 'The Six' SportsCenter which drew 421,000." Ball is "obnoxious and creepy but he’s no phony." That is "all that matters." Ball has "made enemies of some columnists, basketball commentators and Valley of the Stupid Gasbags." Raissman: "Good for him. They should thank him for providing fresh material." He has "inspired outrage and plenty of laughs" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 3/26).
