League Notes

In California, Jim Alexander noted 11 of the 40 cars in Saturday's Xfinity Series Service King 300 were driven by Cup Series competitors. If the "idea is that allowing Cup drivers into Saturday’s competition enhances interest ... well, the numbers show otherwise." There were "maybe" 25,000 fans in attendance at the 68,000-seat grandstand for the race. Alexander: "So if the Cup guys don’t attract eyeballs on TV and don’t compel more folks in-market to pay for tickets ... well, why are they even racing Saturdays?" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 3/26).

TIGHTEN THE SHIP? In California, Jeff Fletcher wrote though it is "unlikely" Spring Training will be shortened, it is "always a question asked this time of year." This season, Spring Training has been "even longer to allow extra work for players who were leaving their teams for the World Baseball Classic." Angels P Matt Shoemaker said, "I don't necessarily enjoy the length, but I enjoy the time to get ready for the season. If it was shorter, I would just be getting ready in a different way in the offseason. You could do it either way" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 3/26).

WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER GUYS? In Ft. Lauderdale, Ira Winderman wrote it has "not been a good look" for the NBA in recent weeks with star players sitting out primetime Saturday night games for rest. The league is attempting to "build a 'Saturday Showcase' franchise." But there also "has been another, unaddressed dynamic, teams sitting perfectly healthy, well-rested players in order to tank for the lottery." The Suns, Lakers, Knicks and other bottom feeders are "not going to the playoffs, but teams they play remain in contention." Winderman: "Yet have you seen Luol Deng, Eric Bledsoe or full-time Carmelo Anthony lately?" (South Florida SUN-SENTINEL, 3/26).
