Ticket Sales Make Up One-Third Of Revenue For Ohio State, With Football The Main Driver

Ohio State fields more than 1,000 athletes across 35 teams, and in '15-16 the school was the only D-I program among Ohio's public universities to "pay all its bills with athletic money," according to Rich Exner of the Cleveland PLAIN DEALER. All other schools "depend on student fees, tax dollars or other non-athletic sources to make up the difference." Salaries, benefits and scholarships "add up to nearly half" of the $166.8M spent by the OSU athletic department. Ticket sales were "one-third" of the $170.8M in revenue for the athletic department. Ohio State raised $61.4M from ticket sales and $33.1M from donations and other contributions. Media rights and distributions from the NCAA and Big Ten totaled another $33.1M. Royalties, licensing, advertisements and sponsorships brought in $17.2M. Overall ticket revenue at Ohio State is up more than 50% since '09-10. Revenue from football tickets "dwarfs all other ticket sales at Ohio State," accounting for $51.5M in '15-16. Next closest "were men's basketball" at $6M, followed by women's basketball at $422,576 and men's ice hockey at $377,104 (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 3/26).
