Marketplace Roundup

In L.A., Tom Hoffarth wrote when it "came to Bill Raftery Jr.’s attention that someone had been profiting off the phrases his dad has been making famous on CBS college basketball broadcasts over the years, the process began to not only seize trademark rights to them but also connect with an apparel company and start cashing in a bit on it themselves." The "three $32 T-shirts that came out in time for the NCAA Tournament are a test run" on StreakerSports.com and not only does one have Raftery’s "likeness on it, but also the phrase 'Onions' and 'With a Kiss'" (DAILYNEWS.com, 3/23).

KICKS BY DESIGN: In Cleveland, Joey Morona notes Cavaliers G Kyrie Irving's "latest iteration of his signature basketball shoe by Nike is currently the best-selling pair of basketball kicks out there." Nike Brand President Trevor Edwards said since the Kyrie 3 launched in December it has become the "top-selling performance basketball shoe in the marketplace." At $120, the shoes are "among the most affordable" of NBA players' signature shoes, "readily available in a number of colorways and not overly complicated in design" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 3/24).

TWO CAN PLAY THAT GAME: In Boston, Donna Goodison notes New Balance and Brooks Running are "lining up to release their new Boston-themed sneakers tied to the 121st running of the Boston Marathon on April 17." New Balance’s "limited-edition Fresh Foam Zante v3 Boston running shoes go on sale Monday online and April 1 at select retailers." Brooks Running's limited-edition Boston Launch 4 sneakers feature "red lobsters and a single blue lobster against a blue background on the uppers, and a seersucker liner printed with a lobster claw on the shoe’s collar and inside heel" (BOSTON HERALD, 3/24).
