Franchise Notes

Monumental Sports & Entertainment Chair Ted Leonsis said that the Wizards and Capitals would play more games in Baltimore if the city "replaces the aging 55-year-old Royal Farms Arena." Leonsis: "Say there is a new arena here, who's to say you couldn't play 10 games in Baltimore?" Leonsis said that the games "could be a mix of pre and regular season" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 3/23).

CHEERIO, MATE: In San Antonio, Tim Griffin writes most observers believe it "won't be a matter of if, but when, an NFL franchise eventually decides to move outside" the U.S., and the "leading candidate for a move" appears to be the Jaguars. The NFL has "concentrated more interest in exploring the London market than any outside the nation." The Jaguars are owned by Shahid Khan, who already owns a soccer team in London with EPL club Fulham F.C. (SAN ANTONIO NEWS-EXPRESS, 3/24).

RAISING ARIZONA: USL club Phoenix Rising FC is one of 12 groups bidding for four MLS expansion spots, and club co-Owner Berke Bakay "believes there is an untapped demographic" in the Phoenix area. In Phoenix, Paola Boivin noted 41% of the city's residents are Hispanic, and the area's large soccer events have "traditionally done well." The CONCACAF Gold Cup in '15 was a sellout at Univ. of Phoenix Stadium. A Copa America event last year between Mexico and Uruguay also "attracted about 60,000." The ownership group also "believes that with the heart of Arizona State’s campus just a few miles away, it has a built-in audience" (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 3/22).
