NASL S.F. Deltas To Live Stream Games On Twitter, Looking To Expand Team's Reach

The NASL S.F. Deltas in their inaugural season are partnering with Twitter to live stream all 16 regular-season home games at Kezar Stadium, and the move "says as much about the tech-centric, tradition-bending approach" of the Deltas as it does about the "push by social media platforms to draw more eyes through live streaming," according to Ron Leuty of the S.F. BUSINESS TIMES. NASL has "negotiated broadcast deals" with ESPN3 and beIN Sports, but owners of the seven other NASL clubs "allowed the Deltas to pursue the franchise's own partnership with Twitter." Deltas CEO Brian Andres Helmick said that by using Periscope, the team likely will "forego some audience on established sports channels." But the "potential benefit of expanding the first-year team's reach and experimentation through Periscope is worth it." Twitter and the Deltas "want to evolve to closer-in views of the action and 360-degree video." Deltas BOD member and NASL consultant Keith Bruce said that if the partnership with Twitter is successful, it "could serve as a model for the entire league" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 3/22). NBCSPORTS.com's Nicholas Mendola wrote Twitter VP/Product Josh McFarland was "previously named as one of the investors in the Deltas, which makes the announcement even more natural" (NBCSPORTS.com, 3/22).

THROW IT ON THE TUBE: In Cincinnati, Erin Caproni notes USL club FC Cincinnati has "expanded its deal with Sinclair Broadcasting Group to broadcast its home and away games" on WKRC-CBS, WSTR-Ind. and Cincinnati's CW affiliate for the '17 season. In the team's inaugural season in '16, "only home games were carried on the local channels" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 3/23). In Jacksonville, Clayton Freeman notes the NASL Jacksonville Armada FC will "return to television" in '17. The team "reached an agreement" with WJXT-Ind. to "televise 14 weekend home games on ThisTV" (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 3/23).
