Ohio Univ. Heads Back To Adidas With Eight-Year Deal, Parting Ways With Russell Athletic

Ohio Univ. "will have a new look, and a new equipment provider," beginning with the '17-18 school year, as the MAC school yesterday agreed to a multiyear deal with Adidas "beginning in July," according to Jason Arkley of the ATHENS MESSENGER. Ohio Senior Associate AD/External Operations Michael Stephens said that the eight-year pact will offer the athletic program "up [to] $600,000 per year in equipment, gear, shoes and apparel." Arkley notes under terms of the deal, the school "will be required to spend a minimum of $200,000 each year to unlock the allotment." Ohio "will be eligible for $600,000 per year during years one through five of the new contract," and that number "will rise to $635,000 per year during years six through eight." Stephens said that "following eight years, there are two one-year extensions built into the contract available to either side." He added that Ohio "will be granted $120,000" of gear and apparel this year as "part of a transitional incentive at no extra charge." Arkley notes Russell Athletic has "been the exclusive provider" for Ohio since '07. Adidas "provided the Bobcats with uniforms" until '07. Ohio’s "current contract with Russell provided Ohio with nearly $400,000 per year in athletic gear." However, that agreement "did not cover footwear," and because of that, Ohio Athletics was still "spending $200,000 per year in regards to equipment" (ATHENS MESSENGER, 3/22).
