PGA Tour Appears To Soften Stance On Daily Fantasy By Allowing Wilcox-DraftKings Deal

Golfer Willy Wilcox last week "officially signed a deal with DraftKings, agreeing to appear at some events on the company’s behalf, making him the first PGA Tour golfer to have an official relationship with a daily fantasy sports website," according to Brian Wacker of GOLF WORLD MONDAY. However, Wilcox' agent, Drew Carr of Fidelity Sports Group, said, “This is not an endorsement of DraftKings, and it is not an endorsement agreement." Wacker notes the deal is a "creative workaround" that was approved by the Tour, as players have been prohibited from "having endorsement deals with gaming companies," as well as DFS sites. Allowing Wilcox to be "involved in any capacity would seem a shift in the tour’s stance." Sources said that what was "once a sensitive non-starter" under previous PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem has "become more fluid under new boss Jay Monahan" (GOLF WORLD MONDAY, 2/27). Carr said that Wilcox "won't have a DraftKings logo on his bag or apparel, and is in no way 'endorsing' the company" (GOLFDIGEST.com, 2/23).
