Denny Hamlin Signs Contract Extension With Joe Gibbs Racing, Longtime Sponsor FedEx

NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin on Thursday signed an extension with Joe Gibbs Racing that also includes a "new deal for longtime sponsor FedEx," according to Jenna Fryer of the AP. FedEx has been with JGR since '05, and is the "only primary sponsor Hamlin has had at NASCAR's top level." Hamlin said that he has "never really explored free agency." Hamlin: "I've been a horse with blinders. Everything has been so good at home, why venture out?" Terms of the deal were not released, and neither were details of FedEx's extension. At 36, Hamlin "probably thinks he has roughly a decade left on his career" (AP, 2/23). Hamlin said, "I can't tell you how good the dynamic within this team is. ... FedEx does a wonderful job at activating at each race track." Team Owner Joe Gibbs said that he is "proud of the relationship with FedEx." Gibbs: "FedEx is a standard bearer in our sport for what this sport is all about. ... It's exciting for us to have partners like this" (FOXSPORTS.com, 2/23). Motorsports writer Jeff Gluck noted Hamlin "could have been an intriguing free agent." But the move "reaffirms Hamlin's position as a key leader at JGR and will leave" him in position to "win races and championships in the prime of his career as older drivers continue to retire" (JEFFGLUCK.com, 2/23).
