FS1 Developing New Shows For Katie Nolan After Nixing "Garbage Time", "Fox Sports Live"

FS1 is "developing a variety of new TV shows for Katie Nolan, following the cancellation of the weekday 'Fox Sports Live' with Jay Onrait and Dan O'Toole and the end of her once-a-week 'Garbage Time' late night show," according to Michael McCarthy of SPORTING NEWS. Sources said that Nolan "could host shows in either the late-night, morning or afternoon windows." A source added that her TV exposure on FS1 will "increase 'five-fold,'" but it is "unclear whether the 'Garbage Time' name will remain in the mix." McCarthy noted it is "more likely Nolan will host brand TV shows with fresh names, casts and show formats" (SPORTINGNEWS.com, 2/23). In Boston, Chad Finn cites a source as saying that Nolan is "in line to become a significant part of the plan to replace 'Fox Sports Live.'" The net "knows it has something in Nolan, even if it doesn't recognize this: She's better than what the network seems interested in becoming" (BOSTON GLOBE, 2/24). Meanwhile, in N.Y., Anthony Barstow writes the end of "Fox Sports Live" should "not come as a shock." The show "never was a ratings success and has lagged far behind" ESPN's "SportsCenter" in viewership since its debut in '13. Whatever Nolan "wants to do, it is more evidence of a new era at Fox Sports and a new world order in sports broadcasting" (N.Y. POST, 2/24). In St. Louis, Dan Caesar writes FS1 "never was able to rival ESPN in the ratings, and has changed its approach to feature 'hot-take' talk shows over highlight-driven programs" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 2/24). ESPNW's Kavitha Davidson tweeted, "@katienolan is a treasure and deserves all the airtime." Radio Disney's Daniel Dudley: "FS1 needs to build the network around Katie Nolan." Freelance writer Alexander Goot: "@katienolan needs platform where she's surrounded by smart people and given freedom to do smart things." FS1's Nick Wright: "She's a superduperstar and everyone knows it."

HOME SWEET HOME? The GLOBE & MAIL's David Shoalts notes talk "swirled on social media Thursday night that TSN was poised to announce Onrait is on his way home and there are indications the news could be unveiled as soon as Friday." He and O'Toole "became stars on TSN for providing comedy along with the sports highlights, but there are as many arguments against an easy return to the Canadian airwaves as there are for it, at least as it concerns them coming back as a pair to preside over a highlight show." Neither Onrait nor O'Toole "can say much, since their contracts do not officially expire until the end of March and their return to the job market depends on whatever non-competes, severance, etc., are in their deals." The first and most compelling argument "against a quick return home is that neither Bell Media, which owns TSN, nor Rogers Media, the Sportsnet owner, is awash in money right now." However, the Onrait and O’Toole duo is an act "most broadcast executives at either TSN or Sportsnet would want." Their "comedic stylings around the highlights on TSN's late-night 'SportsCentre' drew big numbers for what used to be a ratings graveyard" (GLOBE & MAIL, 2/24). In Vancouver, Patrick Johnston writes TSN SportsCentre and Sportsnet Central both are "struggling to maintain their former footholds." Johnston: "The sports news landscape has changed" (VANCOUVER PROVINCE, 2/24).
