Verizon, Lions Make Upgrades To Wi-Fi At Ford Field, Increasing System's Capacity

Verizon, which installed the Wi-Fi system at Ford Field in '12, said that it has "quadrupled capacity in the 65,000-seat stadium" to address the system's problems, according to Frank Witsil of the DETROIT FREE PRESS. Verizon "drilled into the concrete walls, pulled cables throughout the stadium, and added antenna systems, some of which are mounted to the silver handrails in the aisles." The wires are "hidden inside the handrails and run underneath the stadium." The Lions said that this year's improvements are "expected to allow all guests with any wireless carrier to log on to wireless Internet at no charge by the start of football season." Prior to the improvements, access had been "limited to Verizon customers." The upgrades also are "expected to provide more tech opportunities for guests, including augmented and virtual reality." In addition to improving Wi-Fi, Verizon is "installing equipment to handle and enhance cellular service through the stadium." Verizon and the Lions said that the upgrades "cost millions of dollars, but declined to be more specific" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 2/24). MLIVE.com's Nate Atkins notes the upgrades join a "number of facelifts to Ford Field this offseason." Last week, the team "announced the installation of 152-foot video boards in each end zone." They are also "adding a new sound system and a 6,800-square foot lounge bar" (MLIVE.com, 2/24).
