Economic Impact Study Has NFL Optimistic About Expanded Presence In Mexico City

An NFL-commissioned study into last season's Texans-Raiders game in Mexico City has league Exec VP/Int'l Mark Waller “optimistic that all involved will want to extend, and perhaps expand, the relationship” beyond ’18, according to Tom Pelissero of USA TODAY. A study by consulting firm EY “pegged the incremental increase in Mexico City’s gross domestic product” at $45M for the Nov. 21 game at Estadio Azteca and the surrounding events. That puts it “nearly double the impact of an NFL game in London." Waller said, “It would obviously make sense for us to explore the opportunity to commit to longer.” He added, “I would like to think that the success of the first game plus the attractiveness of the matchup we’ve put down there for 2017 would end up with a relationship that extends beyond 2018.” The Raiders and Patriots will play in Mexico City this year. Waller said that the preference is to "play again the weekend before Thanksgiving to establish a routine, similar to how the NFL regularly played in late October during the early days of its London series” that began in ‘07. He said that he has "no doubt the Mexico City market could support more than one game in a season.” However, he added that the reluctance of teams "to give up home games limits the inventory” (USA TODAY, 2/24).
