49ers Chief Strategy Officer Paraag Marathe Opens Up About Role With Franchise

49ers Chief Strategy Officer Paraag Marathe has "remained behind the scenes working for the 49ers mostly on contract and salary-cap matters," though he recently gave a wide-ranging interview that "touched on his personal life, as well as his responsibilities during his 16 years" with the team, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBAYAREA.com. Marathe, who also holds the title of Exec VP/Football Operations, has been "viewed as an 'impediment' to the 49ers' ability to attract top candidates for their openings." There has also been "mystery about his role while working with head coaches." Marathe said, "It's unfortunate that's out there, if that's out there. I won't say it's something that doesn't bother me at all. Of course, it stings. But I do know, I try to keep my head down and do a good job and support the people who are here. ... I'm not trying to be anything other than what I am, which is a support to the coach and the GM." The 49ers this month named John Lynch GM and Kyle Shanahan coach, and Marathe said "nothing speaks better" to the team's hiring process than the "quality of the two men." Marathe: "I can't tell you, just in the last two weeks even, how inspiring it's been to be at work, just seeing these guys work together and how they've already transformed the building."  He added, "My job is to keep my head down, stay [in] my lane, do my job and help the head coach and GM as much as I can." Meanwhile, Marathe said it is his job to keep the 49ers' cap space "as flexible as possible." But he said "making decisions on players" from a "football standpoint" falls to Lynch and Shanahan (CSNBAYAREA.com, 2/22).

IN WITH THE NEW: In S.F., Eric Branch reports 49ers Assistant GM Tom Gamble, who "spent 10 seasons" with the franchise, has left the organization. The move comes "just over three weeks" after Lynch replaced fired GM Trent Baalke. Gamble's exit "wasn't a surprise" after the 49ers named Broncos Dir of College Scouting Adam Peters VP/Player Personnel and former Lions GM Martin Mayhew Senior Personnel Exec (S.F. CHRONICLE, 2/23). In San Jose, Daniel Mano writes unlike when Gamble left in '13 to be Eagles VP/Player Personnel, his next destination is "not known" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 2/23).
