Washington State's $13M Deficit Shrinking; Balanced Budget Expected In Three Years

Washington State Univ. President Kirk Schulz said that WSU's $13M athletic budget deficit is "shrinking and he expects that within three years the department will have a balanced budget," according to Shanon Quinn of the MOSCOW-PULLMAN DAILY NEWS. Schulz said spending in the department is down $3-4M from the previous year. Schulz credited WSU AD Bill Moos and other department staff with "finding creative ways to cut spending, including cutting travel costs and leaving some positions empty on the cost reduction side." Also helping is that WSU has "seen an uptick in ticket revenue." Schulz said, "We've been really aggressive on ticket sales." He added that part of a plan introduced in September was to "work with an outside firm for ticket sales." Schulz: "We actually had a better year than expected with ticket sales and ticket revenue. Some of those things we put in place this summer are starting to pay off." Quinn notes WSU also is "providing partial compensation for receiving less revenue than expected" from the creation of the Pac-12 Networks (MOSCOW-PULLMAN DAILY NEWS, 2/22).
