Coyotes G Smith Calls NHL's Concussion Protocol Flawed, Says It Needs An Overhaul

Coyotes G Mike Smith in Monday's game against the Ducks was removed during the third period under the NHL's concussion protocol, and yesterday said that the league's concussion system "needs an overhaul," according to a front-page piece by Bob McManaman of the ARIZONA REPUBLIC. Smith: "There’s a lot of flaws in the system, especially with the goalie position, and it needs to get fixed. What stops a fourth liner from going and bumping into a goalie? It’s just a two-minute penalty to get your starting goalie out? I don’t think it’s happened in a playoff game yet, but I’m sure it will." In Monday's game, Smith "wasn't cleared until there were about 90 seconds left in the game." Smith said, "Once the spotter says it’s a mandatory test, you have to come out of the game. I told our trainer I wasn’t going to come out and they informed the ref, but the ref’s not allowed to drop the puck until you leave the game." Coyotes RW Shane Doan said, "I understand they’re trying to protect us. But I think there has to be at times a little common sense, too, in figuring out how to handle it a little bit more to the situation." Doan, like Smith, also "has an issue with the spotter being allowed to make such a significant decision while watching the game from 2,000 or more miles away." McManaman notes what Smith "doesn’t think is particularly fair is how long it takes for doctors to administer the protocol test" (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 2/22).

BAD BYE? In DC, Matt Bonesteel noted on paper, the NHL’s "newly installed bye weeks would seem to be a good thing for its players." However, most of the 20 teams who already had their byes have come to the "realization that the format might not be so great for their immediate fortunes." After Sunday’s games, NHL teams "have gone 4-12-4 in their first game back from the bye." The bye weeks "have not only been bad in the short-term games-won metric, but a growing number of coaches say they’re actually bad for player health, which is why they were instituted in the first place" (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 2/21). The league reportedly is considering changing up the bye week format for '17-18 (THE DAILY).
