MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred Defends D-Backs In Battle Over Chase Field Upgrades

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred yesterday “stood firmly behind" the D-backs in their battle with Maricopa County over the costs of ballpark upkeep at Chase Field, according to Nick Piecoro of the ARIZONA REPUBLIC. Manfred said, “We take very seriously the obligation to have a major league-quality facility in each and every market. It’s absolutely clear from the material that has been made available to me there are serious maintenance needs that need to be met with respect to the stadium.” Manfred said that he was in contact with D-backs Managing General Partner Ken Kendrick and President & CEO Derrick Hall “before the team filed a lawsuit last month suing the county for failing to ‘uphold its responsibilities’ to fund” up to $187M in repairs and upgrades. The county “argues that the lease agreement stipulates that those responsibilities fall on the team.” Manfred: “That stadium, to be a major league-quality stadium, needs work” (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 2/22). Kendrick last week said that the team “will not go to arbitration to resolve the dispute.” Chase Field is 19 years old, and the D-backs’ lease “requires the team to play there” until ’28 (AP, 2/21).
