Bucks' Video Board For New Arena Goes Against NBA Trend Of "Monster Boards"

The center-hung video board at the Bucks’ new arena for '18 "counters the 'monster board' trend at other NBA venues," according to Don Muret of SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL. Yet Bucks COO Mike McCarthy said that Dakrtonics-produced board, which is 25 feet tall and 29 feet wide, is still "twice the size of the one in place at BMO Harris Bradley Center." The new board's "four curved screens are all of equal size, projecting the same image to all fans, whether they’re sitting along the sidelines or behind the baskets." Bucks officials said that it is "the largest board tied to that design in the NBA." It is "similar to the Daktronics center-hung" video board at MSG. McCarthy said that it was "important to design the board without it being a distraction from the action on the court." Daktronics VP/Live Events & Spectaculars Jay Parker said that the board has a "6-millimeter resolution, on par with other NBA center-hungs, and can accommodate 4K broadcast technology, the next generation of high-definition images." Daktronics will "supply a 360-degree ribbon board in the seating bowl, high-resolution screens in the corners of the upper deck and more than 20 LED screens installed on the concourses and premium areas, a relatively new feature at big league venues" (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 2/20 issue). Bucks President Peter Feigin said that the team was investing about $10M for the "main scoreboard, other displays inside the arena and large outdoor displays." In Milwaukee, James Nelson notes those include a 15-foot-by-85-foot see-through display that will "wrap around the northwest corner of the arena and another large display that will be added to the side of the arena's new parking structure" (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 2/22).
