NASCAR driver DARRELL WALLACE JR. has launched his "first philanthropic venture, 'The Bubba Wallace Scholarship.'" Wallace established the merit-based scholarship at his alma mater, Northwest Cabarrus High School in Concord, N.C., to "benefit one student a year" beginning in '17. The $10,000 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior (NBCSPORTS.com, 2/20).

BACK IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT: DALE EARNHARDT JR. appeared on NBC’s “Today” this morning to wave the green flag on a Soap Box Derby race between co-hosts MATT LAUER and CARSON DALY. Earnhardt said he is "feeling great” after missing the second-half of the '16 Sprint Cup season recovering from concussions. Earnhardt: “It’s been a long recovery but I was with some great doctors up in Pittsburgh and feeling good, ready to go race.” Gumbel asked, "When you were sitting out for that time, did you give any thought … to saying, ‘No, I'm done, that’s it.’” Earnhardt: “You have to ask yourself some pretty tough questions, but I still have some racing left in me and I didn't want to have any regrets, and I feel great" ("Today,” NBC, 2/21).

: RORY MCILROY on Sunday played a round of golf with PRESIDENT TRUMP in Florida. McIlroy said, "He probably shot around 80. He's a decent player for a guy in his 70s." The foursome was "rounded out" by Int'l Sports Management Dir of Player Management NICK MULLEN and a friend of Trump's, RICHARD LEVINE (ESPN.com, 2/20)....Broncos LB BRANDON MARSHALL "will receive" the '17 Courage Award from the Harvard Graduate School of Education's Alumni of Color. He will be presented the award at the group's conference March 3-4 (DENVER POST, 2/21)....Pro Football HOFer and Cubs fan MARV LEVY has “authored a children’s book that celebrates” the team’s ’16 World Series championship entitled, “Go Cubs Go!” (DEMOCRATANDCHRONICLE.com, 2/19)....Former NFLer BRAYLON EDWARDS “currently is taking four classes at Michigan and has an internship in the athletic department.” He was “24 credits shy when he left for the NFL and is now on track to earn a general studies degree.” He will “complete his degree work the second week in July but will get his diploma during graduation April 29” (DETROIT NEWS, 2/20).

IN MEMORY: Broadcaster and former KSTP-ABC sports anchor ROD SIMONS died Monday in Fort Myers, Fla., where he was “covering Twins spring training.” He was 56 years old. Twins President DAVE ST. PETER on Twitter wrote Simons was the “definition of class.” Simons was a “contributor to the Twins broadcasting station,” KQGO-FM (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 2/21).
