BAMTech Brings On Amazon's Michael Paull As CEO; Will Play Key Role In ESPN OTT Network

MLBAM has hired Amazon exec MICHAEL PAULL to become the new CEO of its BAMTech subsidiary. The hire is part of a broader strategy that will see MLB President of Business & Media BOB BOWMAN relinquish his role running BAMTech’s day-to-day operations. The shift has been contemplated since last summer's equity deal in which Disney acquired a third of BAMTech for $1B. Paull, who will relocate to N.Y. and is due to start next month, will report to a BAMTech BOD that includes Bowman, MLB Commissioner ROB MANFRED, MLB Giants President & CEO LARRY BAER, Royals Owner & Chair DAVID GLASS, NHL Commissioner GARY BETTMAN, ESPN President JOHN SKIPPER and Disney Senior Exec VP & Chief Strategy Officer KEVIN MAYER. Paull had been Amazon VP/Digital Video since '14 and had been with the online retailer since '12, playing a key role in the development of Prime Video. He also previously held senior positions with Sony Music, Sony Pictures, Fox Entertainment and Time Warner. The selection of Paull came after a search over the past several months led by global firm Egon Zehnder. "Michael is a talented and accomplished executive who shares our collective vision for BAMTech as it aggressively explores new means to acquire and distribute video content,” Manfred said in a statement. Paull will be a key figure leading the development and release of an ESPN-branded OTT video network central in the Disney-BAMTech deal.
