Franchise Notes

In Seattle, Geoff Baker notes the Sounders are “expanding the seating capacity" for their March 19 home opener against the Red Bulls at CenturyLink Field. The current capacity of just under 40,000 is “being upped by an undisclosed amount with tickets now available in the stadium’s 300 level.” The team’s first-ever championship banner “will be unveiled at the game, while several championship-themed match-day giveaways to fans will also take place” (SEATTLE TIMES, 2/21).

INTERNATIONAL ASSIST: The NHL Kings will now oversee all operations of German Hockey League club Berlin Eisbaren, which, like the Kings, are owned and operated by AEG Sports. The Kings will now begin leading all hockey operations and administrative matters, directing the day-to-day leadership of Managing Dir Peter John Lee. He will report directly to Kings President of Business Operations Luc Robitaille (Kings).

NOT SO FAST: PRO FOOTBALL TALK’s Mike Florio noted ESPN analyst Louis Riddick “may be embellishing and exaggerating his assessment of how close he came” to being named 49ers GM. A source said that Riddick “wasn’t nearly as close to getting the job as he now contends.” Florio wrote it is an “odd circumstance that ultimately won’t make Riddick more likely to get a GM job in the future” (PROFOOTBALLTALK.com, 2/17).
