Memphis Hoops Beating Attendance Projections, Should Recoup Grizzlies Payment

Univ. of Memphis AD Tom Bowen said the school is “ahead of projection” in terms of the attendance figure at FedExForum needed to recoup its annual payment from the Grizzlies, according to Mark Giannotto of the Memphis COMMERCIAL APPEAL. If UM "averages more than 10,000 fans per game at FedExForum, the school can receive a payment of $800,000." But even that number "depends on additional concession and parking sales." If UM averages "fewer than 6,000 fans per game, it receives no money." The payout if average attendance is between those two figures is "based on a sliding scale." Even though UM is "technically leading the AAC in announced attendance with 9,475 per game, the number used by FedExForum is based on how many people come through the turnstiles of the arena." UM Deputy AD Mark Alnutt said that this year’s full payout is "about $650,000 and the Tigers are currently averaging 6,300 fans heading into the final two home games of the year against Houston and Tulane." Alnutt added that an average of about 7,100 fans "have attended the team’s conference games thus far." If UM were to "remain at this current 6,300-fan pace, it would receive a payment of approximately $409,500 when the season ends" (COMMERCIALAPPEAL.com, 2/18).
