Facility Notes

A SEATTLE TIMES editorial states if the city’s "primary objective" is to return the NBA to KeyArena, it "shouldn’t lease" the arena and adjacent Seattle Center property to a developer without a team. However, Seattle Mayor Ed Murray is "charging forward with a plan" to let developers redevelop the arena and the adjacent property. Proposals are "due in late April and Murray expects to select one in June." This is a "reckless schedule that limits public discussion ... especially since Murray’s not requiring the arena developer to have a team." The editorial: "Seattle must not be suckered by the 'build it and they will come' siren song that’s led other cities to pour hundreds of millions into venues that don’t get pro teams" (SEATTLE TIMES, 2/14).

PHOTO FINISH: The Astros' insist their Spring Training facility Ballpark of the Palm Beaches "will be ready" for its Feb. 28 opener against the Nationals. But in Houston, Jake Kaplan notes work "figures to come down to the final day or two." As of yesterday, scaffolding still "lined the suite level." The concession stands also "were not yet finished." Upon completion, the ballpark will "hold up to 7,900 fans once standing room and an outfield berm are taken into account" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 2/14).

CHANGE ON THE FLY: In Pittsburgh, Chris Adamski noted Heinz Field's preparation for the Feb. 25 Flyers-Penguins Stadium Series game "started in earnest" yesterday as the "outline of a hockey rink was formed by white plastic tiles encircling a patch of grass measuring 200 feet by 85 feet." Large banners "hung outside advertised the event." Inside, a sign "marking the Penguins dressing room hung below the permanent 'Steelers locker room' sign." Across the hall, a Flyers logo placard "hung above a 'Visiting NFL Lockers' sign" (TRIBLIVE.com, 2/13).
