College AD Notes: Southern Miss Hires Jon Gilbert; Stricklin Making The Rounds At Florida

Southern Miss yesterday announced Univ. of Tennessee Exec Senior Associate AD Jon Gilbert as the school's next AD. In Mississippi, Jason Munz notes Gilbert replaces Bill McGillis, who last month took the same position at the Univ. of San Diego. Southern Miss President Rodney Bennett "set a tentative start date for Gilbert as 'the end of February'" (HATTIESBURG AMERICAN, 1/25). Also in Mississippi, Patrick Magee notes Gilbert during a 16-year stint at Alabama was "responsible for facilities management, external operations and athletics development" (Biloxi SUN HERALD, 1/25).

BEATING HART: Tennessee AD Dave Hart will step down from his post June 30, but he said that he is "conducting business as usual" in the meantime. Hart: "Nothing has changed." In Knoxville, Mike Strange writes Hart has "largely been out of the spotlight as UT searched for a new chancellor for the Knoxville campus and speculation bubbled about who would be Hart's successor." But Hart said that any perception that he and the athletic department have been on "cruise control is off base." Hart: "I'm just as intense and involved as I've ever been. ... I am fully empowered until the day the new chancellor has made a decision on the new athletic director" (Knoxville NEWS SENTINEL, 1/25).

HITTING THE ROAD: In Jacksonville, Garry Smits writes Florida AD Scott Stricklin has "wasted little time in getting out to meet boosters, alumni and fans on a statewide level to get to know them and allow them to do the same." Stricklin yesterday in Jacksonville addressed more than 100 UF boosters. In addition to "continuing Florida’s success" between the lines, Stricklin is "pitching the plans for a new stand-alone football facility and renovations to the baseball and softball stadiums -- just weeks after the final pieces" of $106M worth of projects were completed. Steve Spurrier also has been "making the booster trips with Stricklin." The former football coach and Heisman winner said that the UF fan base has "embraced" Stricklin with "open arms and minds" (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 1/25).
