Names In The News

In N.Y., Julie Creswell profiled Quicken Loans, the company for which Cavaliers Owner DAN GILBERT serves as Founder & Chair. Quicken Loans is the second-largest retail mortgage lender in the U.S., originating $96B in mortgages last year. However, the company has recently "landed in regulators' cross hairs." In a federal false-claims lawsuit filed in '15, the Department of Justice charged that the company "misrepresented borrowers’ income or credit scores, or inflated appraisals, in order to qualify for Federal Housing Administration insurance." The relationship with the DOJ "reflects the in-your-face style" of Gilbert. He said, "You want to know what this case is about? Somebody probably put up a whiteboard and said, 'Here are the 10 largest FHA lenders, now go and collect settlements from them, regardless of whether they did anything wrong.'" Gilbert "appears to be itching for a fight with the Justice Department" (N.Y. TIMES, 1/22).

THE IMPRESSIONIST: The Barberini Museum in Germany is the "brainchild" of Sharks Majority Owner HASSO PLATTNER, which will "house" his art collection. Plattner's collection includes some of CLAUDE MONET's "famous water lily paintings," which are "among the impressionist and modern art works that went on show" recently at the museum (AP, 1/20).

TIGERS RISE UP: The Tigers on Friday honored fallen Wayne State Univ. police officer COLLIN ROSE in an "emotional ceremony." Tigers Exec VP/Baseball Operations & GM AL AVILA was joined by 2B IAN KINSLER and P MICHAEL FULMER, among other team personnel, in "presenting the Rose family and his fiancee, NIKKI, with a framed picture of Rose at Comerica Park." They then "unveiled a framed Rose Tigers jersey, with No. 128, his badge number." Kinsler called it the "most emotional" stop of the team's annual, two-day winter caravan across Michigan. Kinsler: "I'll remember it forever" (DETROIT NEWS, 1/21).
