Super Bowl Ticket Sales Lower Than In Years Past In Hours After Falcons-Pats Matchup Set

Due to "changes in the allocation" of Super Bowl LI tickets, sales "weren't as brisk as in years past" in the hours after the Falcons and Patriots earned their berths to Houston, according to Darren Rovell of ESPN.com. The shift in the marketplace "occurred because many of the tickets that used to flow from teams to brokers through hospitality sponsorship deals were given by NFL owners" to hospitality firm On Location Experiences, which is partly owned by the owners' venture fund. About 1,800 tickets were listed on StubHub last night, which industry insiders "say is roughly half of the usual volume." On Location Experiences "received 9,000 tickets to sell with the stipulation that 1,500 had to be earmarked for fans of each team that's playing." On Location Experiences CEO John Collins said that Patriots fans as of last night "had the most reservations, while Falcons fans had the least." But Collins said that he "isn't at all disappointed" with the Falcons making the game. Collins said, "The Falcons fans are the wild card. But, for the packages we're selling, they have the strong corporate base in Atlanta to do well." As of the end of yesterday's games, the lowest ticket being offered for sale on StubHub was $3,499, while the median price of all Super Bowl LI tickets sold on StubHub thus far is $4,450 (ESPN.com, 1/22).

GO LONG: In Houston, Baddour & Zaveri wrote under the header, "Houston Goes Deep To Land Third Super Bowl." Houston "ponied up big-time to land Super Bowl LI," but "how big is anyone's guess." Houston Super Bowl LI Host Committee organizers confirmed that at least three entire hotels, including presidential suites, have been "reserved for both teams and the league; a perimeter will be established around NRG Stadium with law-enforcement personnel limiting unauthorized marketing to protect the game's sponsors; and two golf courses and a bowling alley were reserved for a time." However, the host committee "did not always acquiesce to the league's demands." The NFL asked local officials to "waive sales taxes for the league and its affiliates, something city officials say was not done" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 1/22).

HISTORY IN THE MAKING? In Newark, James Kratch wonders if President Trump will make "history" by attending Super Bowl LI, as "no sitting president has ever attended" the game. The "biggest reason why it likely won't happen" is that it would "almost assuredly be a logistical and security nightmare to get Trump into the game" (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 1/23).
