N.C. State, Boston College Baseball Raising ALS Awareness With Game At Fenway Park

The N.C. State and Boston College baseball teams will meet at Fenway Park on April 22 to “help raise awareness for ALS,” according to Joe Giglio of the Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER. The game is the second of the teams’ regularly scheduled ACC series. ESPNU “will air the game between the two programs connected by a common cause.” N.C. State booster group the Wolfpack Club Associate AD/Annual Giving Chris Combs and BC coach Mike Gambino “came up with the idea for the game.” Proceeds “will benefit” BC alumnus and player Pete Frates’ ALS fund. BC has “held an annual ALS awareness game for the past five years” and has been “working with the Red Sox to get the game moved” to Fenway. N.C. State coach Elliott Avent “helped get ESPN involved when he talked with" ESPN President John Skipper at a Panthers game in November (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 1/18). In Massachusetts, Christopher Smith noted Frates was diagnosed with ALS in '12 and is the "founder of the Ice Bucket Challenge." Combs, who played baseball for NCSU from '94-97, was "diagnosed with ALS" in May '16 (MASSLIVE.com, 1/18).
