Cowboys' Jerry Jones Leads Football Summit To Address Issues, Future Of The Game

Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones yesterday led a first-of-its-kind "Football Summit" at The Star in Frisco, where 17 "influential football minds joined Jones for three hours to address concerns about the game" and identify strategies to "grow the game," according to Charean Williams of the FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM. Among those in attendance were SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, Pro Football HOFer Roger Staubach, Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione, Pro Football HOF President & Exec Dir David Baker, Nike Exec VP/Global Sports Marketing John Slusher and General Electric Chair & CEO Jeff Immelt. Immelt said, "There’s kind of a lot of conversation about how do you bridge the sport from when a young boy first starts playing all the way up through high school and then to college" (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 1/18). In Dallas, David Moore notes the group was "presented with data that athletic participation in all youth sports is down overall." Participation in Pop Warner football dropped 9.5% over a recent three-year period, which is "significant" because the NFLPA estimates 60-70% of the league's current players "began in Pop Warner leagues." Immelt said that the goal of the summit is to "establish a sort of centrifugal force for best practices that can be implemented by various governing boards" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 1/18). National Football Foundation Chair Archie Manning said, "It’s not going to be totally safe, but we can make the game as such that a young man that wants to have that experience can have it and have a good experience." ESPN DALLAS' Todd Archer noted the ultimate goal of the summit is to "take the information and data gathered and present it at every level to provide a best practices regarding safety" and the "appropriate age to begin playing football," among other issues (ESPNDALLAS.com, 1/17).
