Frank Beamer, Gene Smith Among Those Formally Added To CFP Selection Committee

Former Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer is “one of three new members to join the College Football Playoff selection committee this season,” along with Ohio State AD Gene Smith and Robert Morris President Chris Howard, according to Matt Murschel of the ORLANDO SENTINEL. The trio “will replace" Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez and former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, whose three-year terms expired, and former Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr, who “withdrew from the committee due to health reasons.” Members “generally serve three-year terms but that period can be either shorter or longer based on the rotation needed according to the playoff group.” Alvarez and Rice “finish their terms” next month as does Furman coach Bobby Johnson and Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt. However, Hocutt “agreed to extend his stay” as the committee chair until February '18 and Johnson “agreed to stay put" until February '19. Hocutt “just completed his first season in charge of the group,” taking over for Arkansas AD Jeff Long in '16. CFP Exec Dir Bill Hancock said that “from time to time he gets telephone calls from people saying they would be interested in joining the group, but the bulk of the list are people that are known or who have been suggested for the job” (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 1/18).

ROLL CALL: ESPN.com’s Heather Dinich noted Johnson and Hocutt “served incomplete two-year terms,” having replaced former West Virginia AD Oliver Luck and Archie Manning, respectively. Hancock said that when the CFP management committee was “considering Smith as a candidate for the selection committee, Ohio State's controversial No. 3 finish” in the final ‘16 poll “wasn't a factor.” The CFP’s recusal policy will “require Smith to leave the room during discussions” about OSU. The selection committee “will have 13 members heading into the 2017 season after having 12 in each of the first three years” (ESPN.com, 1/17). In Pittsburgh, Brian Batko notes Howard is the “only current college president on the committee." Howard, who was a first-team academic All-American RB at Air Force, is “the only committee member from an FCS-level school” (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 1/18).
