College AD Notes: Tennessee Taps Peyton Manning To Serve On AD Search Committee

Tennessee has "selected a search committee" in pursuit of finding a new AD, which will include Peyton Manning, according to Jimmy Hyams of Knoxville-based WNML-FM. UT AD Dave Hart will step down from his post June 30. The committee also includes Browns Owner Jimmy Haslam III, UT BOT member Charlie Anderson, UT BOT Vice Chair Raja Jubran, UT faculty rep Don Bruce and UT Senior Associate AD & Senior Woman Administrator Donna Thomas. No action in terms of hiring an AD is "expected to be taken" until Feb. 15 and the arrival of new UT Chancellor Beverly Davenport. Jubran has previously said that the hire "might not take place until April or May." A source said that UT has "not yet hired a search firm and might not." Sources added that reports that the hiring of former UT football coach Phillip Fulmer as AD is "'almost done' are inaccurate and premature" (SPORTSRADIOWNML.com, 1/17).

KEEPING THINGS UNDER WRAP: Alabama this week tapped Greg Byrne to be its new AD, and in Birmingham, John Talty cited sources as saying that the move was a "culmination of months of meticulous planning, a strong desire to keep all proceedings quiet and a mindset that Alabama should hire the best candidate." After decades of "staying in the Alabama family" at the AD position, school officials "saw value in bringing in an outside perspective." They "put out early feelers to Byrne," who at the time was "viewed as the frontrunner" to become Florida's next AD. Sources said that the "underlying reason" Byrne "said no to Florida ... was his immense interest in coming to Alabama." The search process, led by UA President Stuart Bell, UA System trustee Finis St. John and search firm Turnkey Sports & Entertainment, "cranked up in December" (AL.com, 1/17).

MISSED OPPORTUNITY? In San Jose, Jon Wilner writes Byrne's move to Alabama is "bad for the Pac-12." The fact that the Pac-12 and Pac-12 Networks "went years without maximizing the brainpower and experience" of its ADs -- "not only of Byrne, but others -- was a major miscalculation." Wilner: "The situation is better now ... there is more interchange of information and ideas ... but years were wasted and some decisions might have been different." Byrne was one of several Pac-12 ADs who understood "how all the pieces fit together on campus to make for the best experience for fans and student athletes." Meanwhile, USF AD Mark Harlan, an Arizona alum, "will be near the top" of Arizona's list to replace Byrne. Arizona also "would be smart to call" TCU AD Chris Del Conte (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 1/18).

FOCUSING ON SPARTY: In Detroit, Chris Solari reports Michigan State AD Mark Hollis has resigned as Vice Chair for the Lead1 Association -- formerly the D1A Athletic Directors' Association -- for "personal reasons and to focus on the future of MSU." Hollis confirmed he will "not assume the chairmanship of the organization as was scheduled to begin" in July and run until July '19 (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 1/18).
