Franchise Notes

In New Jersey, Andrew Gross writes there is a "veil of secrecy currently over the NHL with regards to adidas taking over next season as the manufacturer and designer of the teams’ jerseys," but Devils fans can "take a deep breath and relax." A source said that the team's logo will "remain the same," as will the "black-and-red color scheme." The Devils’ "primary identity jerseys are not being redesigned." The Devils will "continue to look like the Devils, and ... that’s a really good thing" (Bergen RECORD, 1/17).

SMOOTH OPERATOR: In Miami, George Richards wrote not only will the Viola family "still retain ownership" in the NHL Panthers after Vinnie Viola becomes Secretary of the Army, but team Vice Chair, Partner & Alternate Gov. Doug Cifu will "slide into Viola’s role as team governor." Cifu and President & CEO Matthew Caldwell's roles "may be expanded a bit in the coming weeks" as Viola "goes through his confirmation process." Viola’s confirmation hearing "isn’t expected" until after President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration. Cifu: “There won’t be many changes, just administrative stuff. I’ll become chairman and governor which means I’ll have to go to more meetings and stuff" (MIAMI HERALD, 1/15).

SEND IN THE CLOWNS: ESPN CHICAGO's Nick Friedell noted with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey shutting down, the "grueling 82-game NBA schedule will face a shift" heading into the '17-18 season. That change will "impact several teams around the league, but especially the Bulls, given that they have annually gone on a two-week trip in late November as the circus takes over the United Center." Bulls players and coaches have "used the trip as a way to grow camaraderie within the group over the years, but the length of the trip was a sore spot for many team officials" (ESPNCHICAGO.com, 1/16).
