San Diego CBS Affiliate Still Planning On Carrying Chargers Games Despite L.A. Move

San Diego-based KFMB-CBS is "apparently not" moving its coverage away from the Chargers even though the team is moving to L.A., according to Tom Krasovic of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. KFMB GM Alberto Mier y Teran said, "We're going to be carrying a lot of Chargers games this year." No longer "required to air Bolts telecasts in San Diego, it’ll be up to CBS corporate executives to pick which NFL games will air on KFMB." Mier y Teran: “The local station doesn’t have any say." He added that San Diegans should "expect the telecasts to remain" on KFMB because even L.A. Chargers games are "apt to outdraw the NFL alternatives in the San Diego market." Though Chargers ratings in this past regular season were the team’s lowest since '03, but the Chargers were "still a force in San Diego," averaging a 24.4 local rating. Mier y Teran: "The Chargers televised games will be the highest-rated games in the market. So, I would prefer we carry as many Chargers games as possible" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 1/17).

IN THEIR OWN WORDS: Former Chargers Exec VP & COO Jim Steeg in an op-ed to the UNION-TRIBUNE noted in his six years with the team, the NFL "never truly investigated the issues" in San Diego as it related to finding a new stadium. The Spanos family, which owns the Chargers, "alienated many people and organizations in the community," including "many that could have come to their aid." There also were "many that could have influenced community decisions" and "many that would have helped to prevent this move" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 1/15). Meanwhile, UNION-TRIBUNE Chargers photographer and videographer Annie Heilbrunn writes the NFL is "making it easier for fans to disengage." The "greed and manipulation that for so long was hidden behind the scenes is now front and center, flashing across our social media feeds." This Chargers move "shouldn't have happened." Heilbrunn: "We know it. The NFL knows it. Fans know it. But it did, and a price will be paid" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 1/17).
