NFL Sees A Welcome Rise In The Number Of Minority Head Coaches Being Hired

NFL teams "hired more minorities as first-time head coaches in five days than they had hired in the previous five years," according to Mike Sando of ESPN.com. Last week the Broncos hired Vance Joseph and the Chargers hired Anthony Lynn as their head coaches. It may or may not "signify a trend, but at the very least, there is movement where progress had slowed." Fritz Pollard Alliance Foundation Chair John Wooten, whose organization promotes diversity and equality of job opportunities in the NFL, said, "The thing that was extremely gratifying is that there were no token interviews this year" (ESPN.com, 1/14).

CHAIN OF COMMAND: ESPN.com's Mike Rodak noted new Bills head coach Sean McDermott confirmed that he and GM Doug Whaley "will report directly" to Owner Terry Pegula. That is the "same structure the Bills used under former coach Rex Ryan and one that Pegula feels is 'more common than it is unusual' in the NFL." McDermott said, "I say that it was the best job on the market for a couple of reasons: namely, the ownership, Terry and Kim. I've seen what great ownership looks like, and we have two great owners in Terry and Kim that are willing and committed to this football team, this organization and the city of Buffalo." He added, "Secondly, when you talk about a fan base, I've been up here, and I've played here before. I've seen those fans, capacity crowd, hanging over that railing, screaming when we were trying to do something on the other sideline. And that's something I want to be a part of" (ESPN.com, 1/13). In Buffalo, Vic Carucci wrote McDermott's introductory news conference on Friday was, in "keeping with his firm but understated nature, short of highlights" (BUFFALO NEWS, 1/14). Also in Buffalo, Jerry Sullivan noted during the news conference McDermott was "reserved and self-effacing." McDermott's personality is the "polar opposite of Ryan's" (BUFFALO NEWS, 1/14).
