California Baptist Univ. Begins Process Of Moving To D-I, Accepts Invite To Play In WAC

California Baptist Univ. announced Friday that it will "begin the process of moving" to D-I, according to Allan Steele of the Riverside PRESS-ENTERPRISE. The school "accepted an invitation" to join the WAC. CBU will "continue to compete" in the D-II PacWest Conference next season before joining the WAC in '18-19. CBU is building a $73M on-campus arena which is "set to open this spring." CBU President Ronald Ellis said that the new arena was "part of [a] series of building blocks set in place to eventually make the move." CBU AD Micah Parker added that all of the school's teams are "currently fully funded" to D-II scholarship levels. There will be more available at the D-I level, and the plan is to "keep the teams at the maximum allowed." The move does "not require the school to add any teams, but upgrades to the soccer field and baseball and softball stadiums and possible the aquatics are being discussed" (Riverside PRESS-ENTERPRISE, 1/14). In Texas, Greg Luca noted CBU has been competing in D-II since '11-12, "winning 29 conference championships in that span." The school "sponsors 20 sports -- 15 of which will compete in the WAC -- and has an athletic budget" of $14.5M for '16-17, "ranking in the WAC's top half" (McAllen MONITOR, 1/14).
