IN MEMORY: Hockey HOFer MILT SCHMIDT passed away yesterday at the age of 98. NHL Commissioner GARY BETTMAN said, “Milt was a landmark presence in Boston’s sports landscape.” Schmidt joined the Bruins as Assistant GM in ’66 before serving as the team’s GM from ’67-73. He then left the Bruins to become GM of the expansion Capitals, where he served as GM from ’73-76. He rejoined the Bruins in ’77 as Senior Dir of Corporate Season Ticket Sales. He was later Boston Garden Club Manager. He was recently “named one of the NHL’s 100 Greatest Players, who are being celebrated as part of the league’s 100th anniversary this season” (BOSTON GLOBE, 1/5). Schmidt’s “most essential impact was that he helped to create and epitomized the core credo what being a part of the Bruins is supposed to mean” (BOSTON HERALD, 1/5).
