NFC Franchise Notes: Steve Young Says 49ers' Past "Gingerly Embraced" By Yorks

Pro Football HOFer Steve Young yesterday on S.F.-based KNBR-AM said the 49ers' past is "gingerly embraced." The comments came two days after 49ers CEO Jed York said that he would "'absolutely' be reaching out to some of the franchise’s great players for counsel." But Young noted the Yorks, which own the club, "do a great job with the alumni." Young: "All positive things. There’s no negatives. They are certainly not looking to recreate the 49ers of the '80s and '90s. It’s just not part of the future" (SFCHRONICLE.com, 1/4). In S.F., Ann Killion writes under the header, "Who Wouldn't Want To Work For The 49ers?" But any coaching and GM candidates must "get along" with York, who has a "long history of making bad decisions." Candidates also must "ignore" Chief Strategy Officer & Exec VP/Football Operations Paraag Marathe, who "pops up in football meetings that have nothing to do with his primary responsibilities" Killion: "Overlook his bizarre influence over the owner" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 1/5).

CAN'T BUY THEIR WAY OUT: Eagles Exec VP/Football Operations Howie Roseman yesterday in his end-of-season press conference said that the team is "trying to get out of the free-agency business." In Philadelphia, Jeff McLane writes what "matters most is that he gets it right because it's his reputation." On the surface, Roseman "appears willing to hand over some of the reins." However, the Eagles' Draft record since Roseman was named GM in '10 is "dubious" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 1/5). Also in Philadelphia, Bob Ford writes what "did come through clearly" from Roseman's presser is that he "doesn't think the Eagles are particularly close to achieving elite status" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 1/5). The PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS' David Murphy writes when Roseman talks, he "does so in the sort of the banal nothingspeak that plays well in conference rooms and at dinner tables, his observations meticulously crafted to elicit nothing but nods and an occasional chuckle." However, the "absence of substance draped in a camouflage of all of the things that matter far less than cogent thought or keen ideas: grammar, syntax, elocution, eye contact" (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 1/5).

WORK TO BE DONE: ESPN L.A.'s Alden Gonzalez noted Rams Exec VP/Football Operations & COO Kevin Demoff insisted the team is "not in a rebuilding phase." Demoff said, "This is not a rebuild to me whatsoever. This is maximizing the talent we have. And we do have to go into the offseason and improve our personnel across the board." The Rams are looking to fill their head coaching position after firing coach Jeff Fisher, but Demoff said, "It’s not just a coaching issue. We need to get better on the personnel side" (ESPNLA.com, 1/4).
