A's President Dave Kaval Looks To Revive Organization, Keep Club In Bay Area

With the Warriors and Raiders trying to leave the East Bay in the coming years, the A's are "doubling down on a city they’ve called home" since '68 and are turning to newly hired team President DAVE KAVAL, whose task is "saving baseball for Oakland," according to a profile by Elliott Almond of the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS. Almond wrote under the header, "The Man Commissioned To Save The Oakland Athletics," and noted A's co-Owner JOHN FISHER "handpicked Kaval" for the way he, as president of the Earthquakes, got a $100M soccer stadium "built in six years." Earthquakes Owner and former A's Managing Partner LEW WOLFF said of Kaval, "I call him a ‘why-not guy’ instead of a ‘what-if guy." Kaval's younger brother PETER KAVAL said, "Dave has the extra gene. People have said no to this guy his entire life." Almond noted Kaval "comes from strong Ohioan stock," as his father’s "roots are Slovak, his mother’s Italian." They "emphasized family, education and Catholicism while living along Lake Erie just a few minutes from downtown Cleveland." Now Kaval is "motivated to keep the A’s in a working-class city that reminds him of Cleveland." Kaval: "There is only one way I know to do things: to be all-in. It’s almost like being on a crusade" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 12/27).
