Jaguars Hire Korn Ferry's Jed Hughes To Spearhead Coaching Search

The Jaguars have hired Korn Ferry Vice Chair Jed Hughes to "help spearhead" their head coaching search after meeting with him Wednesday, which "could expand their list of candidates," according to sources cited by Adam Schefter of ESPN.com. The Jets "once used Hughes to help hire" former GM John Idzik, and the Texans used him to help hire coach Bill O'Brien. He also helped the Univ. of Michigan land coach Jim Harbaugh (ESPN.com, 12/24). CBSSPORTS.com's Jason La Canfora noted Jaguars GM Dave Caldwell is the "public face of the search," along with the team using Hughes to "identify candidates." Hughes most recently has "worked on coaching searches" for the Browns and Falcons. Meanwhile, it remains to be seen if former Jaguars and Giants coach Tom Coughlin would be a "fit as a coach or rather in a team president-type of position, but he certainly will be a factor." La Canfora noted Coughlin is "widely popular in Jacksonville" (CBSSPORTS.com, 12/24).

TWO HEADS ARE BETTER: In Jacksonville, Ryan O’Halloran noted in January '13, Jaguars Owner Shahid Khan "did not employ a search firm to hire Caldwell, who in turn led the interview process to hire coach Gus Bradley." It was "believed Khan spoke regularly" with Pro Football HOFer and former NFL GM Bill Polian throughout the process. Last Sunday, Khan in a statement said Caldwell is "charged" with finding a replacement. A source said that the hiring of Hughes to assist in the coaching search "isn't a sign of Khan not trusting Caldwell to find the right person" (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 12/25). The TIMES-UNION's O'Halloran wrote the "impression the Jaguars gave" by hiring Hughes is "they don’t have a plan or they have a plan but don’t trust it." A source said it is "vogue" to hand $100,000 to a search firm to help find a coach. O'Halloran: "But isn’t this organization full of experienced NFL executives and an owner who observed this process in January 2012 and headed this process in January 2013?" What it "comes off of as, though, is they would rather have a list of 10-12 names presented to them." Plus, bringing in a third party "invites leaks to the national media and other teams about the search." O'Halloran: "One last thing: Maybe this explains why Bradley was fired Dec. 18 instead of Jan. 2 -- the search firm wouldn’t start their work until there was an actual opening" (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 12/25).
