Pitt Names Randy Juhl Interim AD As Outgoing Boss Scott Barnes' Legacy Is Praised

Univ. of Pittsburgh Chancellor & CEO Patrick Gallagher has chosen Vice Chancellor of Research & Compliance Randy Juhl to "lead a search committee tasked with exploring candidates" to fill the school's AD position after Scott Barnes last week agreed to take the same position at Oregon State, according to Brian Batko of the PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE. Juhl previously served as interim AD two years ago when Steve Pederson was fired. Chicago-based search firm DHR Int’l will aid the committee in finding Barnes’ replacement (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 12/24). In Pittsburgh, Paul Zeise wrote Barnes "should be remembered as a great athletic director with tremendous vision and a man who left Pitt in better shape and better positioned for the future of college athletics than when he arrived." He "should be appreciated for his time at Pitt and most importantly for doing the job he was primarily hired to do -- significantly upgrade Pitt’s fundraising." Barnes' initiatives "haven’t yet yielded large numbers in terms of dollars because he really just got started" and he had only been in Pittsburgh for 20 months, but he "built the structure for the next athletic director to be successful." Zeise: "Fundraising isn’t sexy and isn’t what puts people in the seats, but it is the lifeblood of college athletics, and Pitt is now equipped to legitimately compete with the rest of the ACC." Pitt will have "no issue finding a good person to lead the athletic department because it is a much more attractive job now than it was even 20 months ago when Barnes was hired" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 12/24).
