Hold The Phone: The Moments Of The Year That Left Us Shocked, Confused Or Speechless

No player, team or league is perfect, and ’16 saw its share of questionable moments. Here are some of the things that left us scratching our heads.

Water safety tests found that the change in color posed no risk to competing athletes
BOGGED DOWN: Among the issues that plagued the Rio Games, none stood out quite like the pool at the Olympic diving venue changing colors. The Maria Lenk Aquatic Center’s light blue color turned into a murky green over night, something that ROCOG blamed on a proliferation of algae. Water safety tests were conducted, which found that the change in color was of no risk to athletes. Diving practice and a synchronized swimming event went on as planned in the moments after the swamp-like settings first crept in. Athletes said the green coloring did not affect their form necessarily, but admitted the scene was puzzling.

KNOCK YOUR SOCKS OFF: White Sox Exec VP Ken Williams thought 1B Adam LaRoche’s son was spending too much time around the team’s clubhouse. LaRoche disagreed, and the end result of what seemed to be a minor issue saw LaRoche abruptly announce his retirement, a decision that threatened to pit management against the players before the season even began. Reports circulated that the players might boycott a Spring Training game. That never materialized, but it was the first of several mishaps the White Sox endured in ’16, a year that ended with their crosstown rivals, the Cubs, winning their first World Series in 108 years.
