Steve Young Says Comments About York Family More About NFL's Ownership Structure

Pro Football HOFer Steve Young was "back in scramble mode Thursday after he made comments a day earlier that didn’t paint" the York family, which owns the 49ers, in a "flattering light," according to Eric Branch of the S.F. CHRONICLE. Young on Wednesday appeared on S.F.-based KNBR-AM and said of the Yorks, "Their equity value in the team is their ‘A’ game, it’s what drives them. It’s what drives most of the owners. It’s what matters. It’s what they think about. It’s what they talk about. And the ‘B’ game is whether we win some games." Young on Thursday returned to KNBR in an "attempt to clarify his comments." He said that he "didn’t intend to call out the Yorks ... but the overall NFL structure that allows losing teams to rake in profits." Young: “It wasn’t necessarily about [CEO Jed York], or the 49ers’ organization, or the 49ers’ owners. ... My point was, by definition, owners are disconnected.” Branch notes Young "used an excellent example Wednesday when he cited the 49ers’ profitability." The '16 Forbes list of the most valuable sports franchises "had the 49ers at No. 10, up from No. 22 the year before," while their value ballooned 69% year-over-year, from $1.6B to $2.7B. The team currently has the second-worst record in the NFL at 1-12 (S.F. CHRONICLE, 12/16).

DOUBLE DOWN ON TRENT: In Sacramento, Matt Barrows notes fans now arrive at 49ers games -- home and away -- with handmade signs "pleading for the ouster" of GM Trent Baalke. Before Sunday’s game against the Jets, a plane "crisscrossed over Levi’s Stadium trailing a banner" that called for York to fire Baalke (SACRAMENTO BEE, 12/16).
