Sources said that former MLB manager and current Sacred Heart Exec AD BOBBY VALENTINE is on a "short-list of candidates" to be the next U.S. Ambassador to Japan. Valentine has been in "preliminary discussions" with President-elect DONALD TRUMP's transition team regarding the position. A source said that New Jersey Gov. CHRIS CHRISTIE "first surfaced" Valentine's name for the position. Valentine is "still very popular in Japan, having managed the Chiba Lotte Marines for seven seasons, becoming the first U.S. born manager to win the Japan Series with a championship" in '05 (WEEI.com, 12/9).

NAMES: Lions WR ANDRE ROBERTS "loves to golf," and this spring "got the chance to play" at Augusta National Golf Club with NFL Commissioner ROGER GOODELL. Roberts joined a foursome that included Goodell, a member at ANGC, and Cardinals WR LARRY FITZGERALD and QB CARSON PALMER. The two days of golf included a "productive back-and-forth with the commissioner on what can be done to improve the league." Roberts "declined to share the suggestions the players made, but called Goodell 'a great listener' and said he was receptive to ideas" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 12/9)....Former Baylor football coach ART BRILES "sued three school regents and a vice president for libel and slander Thursday, accusing them of falsely stating he knew of reported assaults and alleged gang rapes by players and didn't report them." The lawsuit also asserts that Baylor officials "conspired to damage his reputation and keep him from getting another coaching job" (AP, 12/8)....UFC President DANA WHITE said that fighter CONOR MCGREGOR will be "featured in the upcoming season of HBO's 'GAME OF THRONES'" (ESPN.com, 12/8).
