NFL Franchise Notes: Jets Owner Woody Johnson Criticized For State Of Team

In N.Y., Manish Mehta writes it is "impossible to identify all the culprits who have helped turn the Jets into a losing outfit, but the root of the problem is clear: Woody Johnson." There is "no denying that the owner cares deeply about his franchise." Johnson "desperately wants to fix the problems that have plagued this star-crossed franchise, but he simply doesn’t know the right way to go about it." He "isn’t connected enough in league circles to consistently make wise choices," and he is "easily influenced by a distraught fan base." Johnson’s blunders have "contributed more to the organization’s struggles than any botched draft pick or questionable coaching call" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 12/9).

THE IMPORTANT THINGS: 49ers coach Chip Kelly said members of the York family were "unbelievable” in the way they responded after his father, Paul, died last Friday night. Kelly said that the York family "arranged for a plane to take him from Chicago to New Hampshire that night." In S.F., Eric Branch notes they "did the same for Kelly to return for Sunday’s game in Chicago and return home for his dad’s funeral in Portland, Maine, on Tuesday." In addition, they "arranged for Kelly’s girlfriend, Jill Cohen, to travel from the Bay Area to Chicago to meet Kelly" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 12/9).

IN DUE TIME: THE MMQB's Albert Breer wrote the Raiders "deserve credit" for giving GM Reggie McKenzie time to "build the team and grow into the job." There was a time in recent years when "whispers persisted that the former Packers personnel man wasn’t up to the job, and a feeling that he could be gone after the team whacked coach Dennis Allen" not long after the '14 season began. Now, McKenzie "may be the leader in the clubhouse for executive of the year" (MMQB.SI.com, 12/8)
