Kentucky Fans Snap Up Ticket Allotment For TaxSlayer Bowl Against Georgia Tech

The Univ. of Kentucky on Thursday said that its fan base has "snapped up the team’s initial allotment of 8,000 tickets" for the New Year's Eve TaxSlayer Bowl against Georgia Tech at Everbank Field and has "requested additional tickets," according to Garry Smits of the FLORIDA TIMES-UNION. The game will be played at 11:00am ET on ESPN. UK is playing in its "first bowl game" since the '10 season. That, combined with the team’s strong second half of the season, has "helped spur sales." Jacksonville Sports Council President & CEO and TaxSlayer Bowl President Rick Catlett said that the "last time a team in the game sold out its allotment within days of the announcement" was Tennessee in '14. Georgia Tech has an allotment of 7,000 tickets, and the school "described its sales as 'brisk'" on its website (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 12/9).

TRAVEL WELL: In Pennsylvania, Donnie Collins notes Penn State fans have "overwhelmed local agencies and touring companies" since PSU qualified for the Rose Bowl against USC. Scranton-based travel agency Travelworld Exec VP John Madden said his company sold out its travel packages "in 18 hours." Paulson National Tours President Greg Paulson said that "just about every company in the region with packages to offer is either running out or completely dry by now." As of Thursday morning, Paulson had "just six remaining packages for his four-day, direct-flight trip" to L.A. PSU announced earlier this week its 20,000-ticket allotment for the game "sold out quickly to members of the Nittany Lion Club" (Scranton TIMES-TRIBUNE, 12/9).

STILL HURTING: In Madison, Jason Galloway noted the Cotton Bowl is the "most prestigious bowl" Wisconsin has "received an invitation to" since '12. But in the aftermath of blowing a 21-point lead in the Big Ten Championship against Penn State when the "Rose Bowl and College Football Playoff were still in sight, the reaction of UW’s fan base to the selection has been staggeringly negative." Upper-level tickets for the Cotton Bowl against Western Michigan were "selling for as little as $6 on the secondary market as of Tuesday evening, and some travel agencies in the Madison area have received little interest in game packages or information" (WISCONSIN STATE JOURNAL, 12/8).

BOWL ROUNDUP: Clemson on Thursday morning noted it has sold and assigned approximately 7,000 of its 12,500 ticket commitment to for the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State (Clemson)....An LSU official said that the school has "sold 4,200 of its allotted 9,500 tickets to the Citrus Bowl against Louisville." Attendance "might be hurt because of the bowl’s kickoff time" of 11:00am ET (THEADVOCATE.com, 12/6)....Charlotte Sports Foundation Exec Dir Will Webb said his organization is "realistically hoping" for 50,000 fans at the Dec. 29 Virginia Tech-Arkansas Belk Bowl at Bank of America Stadium, or "maybe a little bit more." Webb: "We're optimistic this year, particularly with Virginia Tech (which has a large alumni base in Charlotte)" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 12/7).
